Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and MI-AIMH – Early Childhood Learning Series (Supervisors)
Supervisors Need Oxygen Too – Part II
In session one, we discussed how when you travel by air, the flight attendant gives instructions to passengers on the importance of using their oxygen masks when there is a reduction in cabin pressure. This concept holds true for supervisors. We know that if we don’t have oxygen, we can’t help anyone else with their oxygen mask. We also examined the parallel process and its impact on relationships. Part Two of this workshop will go deeper by examining the true significance and depth of the supervisor/supervisee relationships when issues of diversity arise. Ideally some components needed for a supervisor to provide ongoing reflective support to staff include being vulnerable, examining sense of self, consistency and authenticity. However, it can be arduous to create a space for openness when issues surrounding diversity, difficult conversations, time management and lack of cultural attunement are present. Opportunities for poignant discussion regarding what to do when our own stuff gets in the way, from both videos and vignettes, will be used to help us to think more deeply about supporting others and ourselves in this current environment of compassion fatigue and work burnout. This training is for those in the DWIHN who currently provide (or have provided) reflective supervision to staff, interns, teachers, etc.
