IMH Statewide Training

An In-depth Exploration of Early Development
Part One: Prenatal Development and It’s Impact on Later Well-Being

MI-AIMH’s Statewide Committee is excited to share our 2020 Training Series! This year we will be offering three days specific to development when working with Pregnant Mothers through Five Year olds. You can register for just one day, but attendance at all three days is recommended.
This training series is for you if you work in the 0-6  field: i.e. infant and early childhood mental health therapists, early care and education, Early On, Early Head Start, HFA home visitors, foster care, pediatricians, nurses, etc. For those working towards Endorsement®, this training series is a wonderful addition to your Endorsement® Application!

Part One Description: IMH clinicians can begin supporting optimal infant development before birth with concrete services, emotional support, and focusing on the parents’ relationship with their unborn child by helping them to become interested in and curious about their future baby’s personality and development. Much is happening for the adults transitioning to parenthood and their experiences, emotions and behaviors shape fetal development and can have implications for development across childhood. The day will begin with a review of basic stages of prenatal development, including the development of the brain and body structures. Following that participants will learn how stressors, like socioeconomic adversity and racism, parental mental health, and exposure to toxins and substances shape development of the fetus and the implications for long term development.

Presenter:

Ann Stacks, PhD, IMH-E® is the Director of the IMH Program at the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute. Early in her career, Dr. Stacks conducted developmental assessments for Early On, which allowed opportunities to connect with parents by delighting with them as their child demonstrated their developmental competencies. For many years at WSU, Dr. Stacks taught the undergraduate infant development course and the graduate course on infant and toddler developmental assessment. She also conducted developmental assessments for the Wayne County Baby Court evaluation and trained a research team to assess infant development as part of a longitudinal study linking fetal brain development with development across early childhood.  Dr. Stacks’ program of research focuses on parental and non-parental caregiver capacities that underlie sensitive caregiving interactions known to support social emotional development in children birth through age three, especially in the context of family risk, including poverty, maltreatment and caregiver mental health diagnoses. Her primary interest is on caregiver (parent, foster parent, and early childhood teacher reflective functioning and how interventions can support this capacity. She is a member of the Michigan Collaborative for Infant Mental Health Research and helped with the assessment of parental reflective functioning in the IMH-HV evaluation. Most recently, she and her colleagues at Michigan State University and University of Michigan were awarded $2.4 million  to develop and test an adaptation of Mom Power for Early Head Start teachers and parents, called Hearts and Minds on Babies. Dr. Stacks work is informed by a community team science approach. She has been working closely with community partners in child welfare, infant mental health and the judicial system for the past 10 years to implement, evaluate and scale up an infant toddler court team.
