What About the Baby? Infant Mental Health Intervention During Pregnancy & Early Childhood
Pregnancy and early parenthood can be a time filled with expectation, wonder, and joy; as well as worry, anxiety, and fear. Expectant families referred to infant mental health programs are navigating a myriad of stressors, including poverty and trauma. Keeping the baby in mind throughout a pregnancy that is surrounded by risk and worry is difficult for parents and infant mental health home visitors. An understanding of typical responses to pregnancy and early parenting experienced by expectant mothers and fathers can provide a foundation from which to assess strengths and concerns related to the parent’s capacity to enter into a relationship with their new baby. This workshop will present information related to the psychological response to pregnancy and early parenting, with consideration of the risks and stressors infant mental health home visitors encounter in their work. Discussion of infant mental health intervention with pregnant and newly parenting families will be facilitated through group activities, video and case examples.
