IMH Statewide Meeting: Autism Services in Michigan for Young Children

June 9, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

| $35.00 – $90.00

Event Navigation

State Autism Services

The growing prevalence of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has increased the demand for effective supports, resources, and early intervention services to address each child’s individual needs. There are a wide range of challenges for children with autism and their families, including transportation, peer relationships, behavioral and language barriers, and inclusion throughout their community and early child education systems.  Michigan strives to be a leader in opportunities, services, and supports for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The presenters will provide an introduction to the Medicaid process to access ASD screenings, comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, and intensive early intervention Behavioral Health Treatment/ABA services through the public community mental health system. The presenters will emphasize and provide guidance about system collaboration and coordination as well as the importance of family engagement in the early intervention process.

Presented by: Morgan VanDenBerg, MDHHS Autism Program

Project ImPACT

Project ImPACT is an evidence-based parent training program housed at MSU’s Autism Research Lab that teaches parents to promote their child’s social-communication skills during daily routines and activities.  A blend of developmental and naturalistic behavioral intervention strategies are used to teach social engagement, language, imitation, and play.  In addition to training for parents, they offer training for intervention providers from various disciplines to implement Project ImPACT strategies in their direct services with children, and to provide parent-mediated coaching.  The presenter will provide an overview of their intervention, the research supporting it, how the intervention might be integrated within their work, and how to access further training.

Presented by Kate Shannon, Project ImPACT
