Home visiting is a service provision strategy that is used within a variety of programs serving infants and toddlers. Home visiting can intensify the professional’s reactions due to the intimate nature and the relationship-based focus of therapeutic. The vulnerability of very young children can also intensify the professional’s feelings of urgency. How home visiting professionals remain ‘professional’ in the face of such intimacy, vulnerability, and risk is essential to consider. This training session will discuss special considerations when providing home-based services: the impact of stress; consideration of diversity; and the use of self. Lecture, discussion, case material and video clips will aid in grappling with home based experiences and make attempts to clear the sometimes blurred lines between professional and ethical responsibility and personal responses
