Understanding the Signs, Symptoms, Effects of, and Treatment Options for Substance Use When Providing IMH Home Visiting Services for Parents of Very Young Children
(0-6 years old)
Working with caregivers who present with current (or past?) substance abuse provides a unique challenge for home visitors. This workshop will focus on how IMH home visitors who work with 0-6 year olds and their caregivers can understand: 1) the effects of drugs on the caregiver’s bran; 2) recognize signs and symptoms of substance use; 3) know how to screen for and assess substance abuse; and 4) design an appropriate treatment plan with caregivers. A combination of lecture and interactive learning, and group activities will be used to address some of the challenges of working with families with current or past substance abuse challenges.
