Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority and MI-AIMH – Early Childhood Learning Series

Implementing the IMH model, but first “Observation!”

This training will explore the foundation of “observation” in implementing the IMH Model with many different families.  The role of the IMH professional is imperative when working with children in multiple homes, working with multiple caregivers (i.e. teenage mother and grandmother). Training will explore observer’s own early relationship history as a key influence on observational assessment.  This training will look at videos to gain a deeper understanding of the observation process.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will recognize the differences between “observation” and “observational assessment.”

2. Participants will increase awareness of how their own caregiving experiences/perspectives influence their observations.

3. Participants will demonstrate awareness of applying a relationship-based context for observing interactions between infants, toddlers, preschoolers and caregiving adults from the child’s perspective.

4. Participants will be able to identify indicators of healthy and at-risk relationship development through guided interpretation of videotaped infant/toddler/preschooler – parent/caregiver interactions.

5. Participants will strengthen their skills in using their observations of infant/toddler/preschooler – parent/caregiver assessments, to develop intervention plans and recommendations for support/intervention needs.

6. Participants will be able to identify specific benefits to engaging in an ongoing reflective supervision/consultation relationship to sharpen their use of observational skills as an essential component of clinical practice.

Licensed Professional Counselors – NBCC Hours – Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH) has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No.6867.  Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.  MI-AIMH is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
