Reflective Supervision – Part One: The Development of a Partnership

The responsibility for supporting another person’s professional growth in child-centered relationship-based practice is certainly worthy of considerable attention. Such a charge may be made at least a little less daunting by considering the supervisor as partner rather than teacher. In this sense, the journey to partnership becomes a mutual commitment to mindfulness, openness, and self-examination/exploration, which widens the path for each participant’s continuing growth, understanding and depth in the work of support and intervention with very young children, their families, and caregivers. Through guided small and large group discussion, this highly interactive training will draw on both structured vignettes and participants’ own experiences to explore the many facets of effectively supportive partnership building in reflective supervision/consultation relationships.

This workshop will be for those providing individual or group reflective supervision. It is expected that attendees have received their own reflective supervision as well as provided reflective supervision to at least one professional. been in the infant-family field for at least 5 years.

As a reminder, Endorsement® renewal requirements include those that endorsed as Infant Family Specialist, IMH Specialist or IMH Mentor-C and provide RSC to others need at least three hours of specialized in-training to be about RSC.

Learning Objectives:

• Recognize the role that self-awareness (including strengths, vulnerabilities and experiences of both supervisor and supervisee) plays in reflective supervision that strengthens culturally sensitive and respectful services and collaborative relationships with all participants.
• Recognize the importance of supporting another person’s professional development in child-centered relationship-based practice through partnering rather than “teaching,” as partnerships encourage paths to mutual growth for all participants.
• Understand how open discussion between reflective supervisor and supervisee of differences between them, including ethnicity, culture, age, gender, personality, etc., and differences in caregiving practices, will support the development of effective intervention partnerships with families and caregiving adults of vulnerable infants and toddlers
• Understand and apply the theoretical construct of intersubjectivity as a pathway for reflective supervisors to assist supervisees in resolving issues related to differences of perspective – in both the supervisory relationship and in the provision of relationship based intervention services.
• Understand and identify specific ways for reflective supervisors to apply the lens of parallel process to assist the relationship based, child-centered clinician/interventionist in maintaining a strong focus on the developmental needs and best interests of infants and toddlers, even in the face of variance in cross-system service goals.
• Identify at least three ways to assist supervisees in building and strengthening their levels of self-competence and self-confidence as essential skills in carrying out the highly specialized tasks in supporting and advocating for the relationship health of vulnerable infants and toddlers.

Registration Fees: MI-AIMH Members – $70, Non-Members – $80, continuing education – $10

Registration deadline: August 2, 2018. This training is limited to 25 seats. Registration is first come, first serve.

Cancellation policy: Notice of cancellation must be submitted in writing no later than 7 days prior to the event for a refund to be issued.
