Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority and MI-AIMH – Early Childhood Learning Series

Advocating in the Child Welfare System on Behalf of Relationships

The first training day, our facilitator, Faith Eidson, will walk us through some of the ways an Infant Mental Health Therapist can advocate within their clinical work on behalf of the young child (i.e. helping caregivers to use words and books etc. to give a frame of what is happening, speaking up about transitions for little ones and families, advocating without alienating, and more!) . The second day, Lisa Velez, will provide us with information and resources about navigating the legal system. The discussion will cover Infant Mental Health Specialists getting written releases, writing court reports, and testifying in court.  Attendees will leave this training more confident in their ability to prepare for court appearances and navigate the many key players within the court room, on behalf of the young child.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will understand the role of the IMH Specialist in working with child welfare involved families
2. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own bias and how it affects their advocacy role
3. Participants will be able to list the key components of a quality assessment of an infant/very young child and family
4. Participants will learn about developmental considerations of infants and very young children that will support their advocacy and clinical work
5. Participants will learn about the unique aspects of working with families for whom addiction is a risk factor
6. Participants will learn and practice the skill of supporting very young children and families in finding the words to talk about what is happening for the child

Continuing Education Information – 11.0 training hours:

Social Work – Approved for 11.0 Michigan SW CEU’s
IMH Endorsement® – Will count towards the requirements for the MI-AIMH Endorsement®
NEW! Licensed Professional Counselors – NBCC Hours – Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH) has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No.6867.  Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.  MI-AIMH is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
