Psychotherapy with Infants and Their Families: What Makes it Work?

In this year of the 100^th anniversary of Selma Fraiberg’s birth, we are privileged to sit together, over several months, to re-examine the original clinical and developmental principles that undergird our field; to update them with new advances in developmental neurobiology—including the science of loss and trauma and new findings in prenatal psychology; and to explore again how it all works. All three day-long sessions will be interactive, with lots of case-focused work, film, meditation, and struggling with open-ended questions—much like the actual work with families.      

When Prof. Fraiberg (then head of the Child Development Project at the University of Michigan) coined the term “Ghosts in the Nursery” in the title to her seminal 1975 article (Journal of the American Academy of Child Psychiatry, vol. 14, No. 3), she managed to make several clinical principles–as well as issues in parenting and even in infant development–concise. (She was inclined to do exactly this, both in her teaching and in her time with parents: to take the complex, the confounding, the mysterious, and make it clear. It’s one of the reasons parents could relate to her so well.)

We will begin our exploration of these principles by wondering: What is it about pregnancy, birthing a child, and commencing this astounding thing called becoming a parent that evokes such re-enactment, such remembering, such struggle to make it better for the baby than it was for ourselves? What, if anything, can we on the outside of the family do to support the whole venture? Is the not-yet-born child paying attention? Can we make any difference in his experience in utero, knowing that this experience will likely carry over into the perinatal period and into childhood? What will it mean if his mother and/or father are able to imagine—and even to “meet”—him before birth? We will study the psychodynamics of pregnancy, to see if light can be shed on how our help can be shaped, and how it is different at each stage of pregnancy.  This is the first training of a three-part series.  It is recommended that participants attend all three sessions.

• Be able to give one example of a mother’s need for support in successfully navigating the normal, maturational work of pregnancy.
• Be able to give one example if an internal or external intrusion into the mother’s maturational work of pregnancy.
• Be able to discuss the link between prenatal or perinatal depression and breakdowns in the maturational work of pregnancy and delivery.
• Be able to write a paragraph describing the dynamics of a prenatal or perinatal infant-parent psychotherapy intervention.
• Be able to give one example of the psychological life of a prenate.

Anticipated Open Registration for June 22nd training – April 16, 2018 – NOTE that attendees that registered and attended the first training on April 13, 2018 will have PRIORITY Registration to register for the June 22nd training.  Instructions will be sent via email.
