The Role of Hair Combing Interaction in Caregiver-Child Attachment: Talk, Touch and Listen

The 2-day training is designed for experienced infant mental health and early childhood practitioners, and educators, as well as clinicians who practice with adolescents and their families. A strengths approach is used to incorporate observations of hair-combing interaction (HCI) between a caregiver and child, as an additional tool for assessment or as a brief intervention to strengthen caregiver-child relationships. These tools may be used with clients from a spectrum of racial, cultural and national backgrounds. Participants will learn the use of three HCI clinical tools. We present the findings from research on the hair-combing task as an opportunity for caregivers to talk, touch & listen while combing hair and strengthen their emotional relationship with their child. We discuss the sociocultural conceptual foundations of hair combing interaction including historical trauma and internalized oppression. Countertransference issues in the use of the HCI protocol by same race or different race practitioners are also discussed. to the training with use lecture, PowerPoints, experiential exercises (using the clinical tools participants can use with their clients), and guided practice analyzing video clips of hair combing. Finally, participants will be provided with next steps needed if participants seek to become certified in providing training in HCI Assessment Protocol.
