Working with Families Series - Dutton Family Part I: Two Wise Women Demonstrate Strengths of Intergenerational Parenting Team

60 min. Mother and grandmother, and three children, two-, three-, and four-years-old. The three-year-old boy has cerebral palsy. Focuses on the strengths of shared caregiving, the family’s hopes for the child, the tensions between mother and grandmother over discipline and family rules, the difficulties with getting EI services and making the transition from Part H to public schooling. The family is limited-income, African-American. Conversations with individual families explore the issues of raising a young child or children with special needs. Families are from diverse cultural, linguistic and economic backgrounds with children representing a wide range of disabilities. They are shown talking with experienced family therapists who demonstrate how to listen to a family’s story and focus on family concerns, priorities and re-sources. Discussion guides included.
